Hiking West Virginia

What better place to find some fall foliage than West Virginia. I know many will say Vermont, or somewhere in New England but when you are already traveling to northern Virginia, just go west an hour and it is amazing what you will find. Not only were the leaves amazing, there were several places to hike, see waterfalls and catch some amazing vista views. A few that we were able to visit were Blackwater Falls, Kennedy Falls, and Monongahela National Forest.

We choses a small town in the heart of it all, Thomas, West Virginia. It was literally a town that you could drive through and not even realize it, so slow down because it is worth exploring. Our room was directly over the pizza joint, Riverfront Wood Fired Pizza, and it was a great place to grab dinner after a long day. If you’re looking for a great place to stay, Alison’s Airbnb was a perfect location!

At the end of the block was another great spot, the Purple Fiddle. What makes this place so special is the daily live music. We somehow timed it just right and caught Heather Hannah and Trevor Reichman who were definitely worth the $10 cover charge! It was a great way to experience some wonderful Appalachian music and good brews.

As we headed out of town the next morning we stopped at the only breakfast spot recommended, Milo’s Cafe and Restaurant in Davis, WV. Their specialty is a hearty country breakfast, and they did not disappoint. With a full belly we set off to check out Seneca Rocks. Tom had an opportunity to climb there a few years ago, so it was a “little” walk (2.6 miles round trip) down memory lane. The parking was right by the trail and the hike was beautiful up the path overlooking more great views.

In two days we managed to visit several water falls, eat some great food, hear some amazing live music and take photos of several surprisingly wonderful sites. If we still lived in Virginia, this would be a trip worth repeating more often. As it is, we still plan to return next time the opportunity arises!
